Irish education spending 'well below other countries'

13/09/2005 - 14:16:39
Ireland lags far behind other developed countries when it comes to spending on primary and secondary education, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

The organisation has ranked Ireland 24th in a league table of education spending in its 30 member countries.

The OECD said Ireland spent the equivalent of $4,400 (€3,300) per student in 2001, compared to more than $8,000 (€6,500) in Norway and $11,000 (€9,000) in Luxembourg.

It also said that, while Ireland's education spending had increased between 1995 and 2001, the country's GDP per capita had also increased by 50% in the same period.
