Irish backpacker dies in Melbourne hospital
07/09/2012 - 07:25:54An Irish backpacker who was seriously injured in an attack in Melbourne has died.
David Greene had been in intensive care after he and his friend were allegedly assaulted in the Australian city on August 26.
The 30-year-old died in the Alfred Hospital this morning. Victoria Police have upgraded their inquiries to a murder investigation.
Mr Greene’s parents Aidan and Catherine, and his brothers Luke and Aidan said he passed away surrounded by his friends and family.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade issued a statement on behalf of the Greene family.
It read: "The death has occurred in Melbourne earlier this morning of David Greene. David passed away surrounded by his family and friends.
"David’s parents, Aidan and Catherine, along with his brothers Luke and Aidan, wish to express their gratitude to all those who have helped and supported them through this difficult time.
"In particular they would also like to express their deep gratitude to the medical staff at The Alfred Hospital for the wonderful care and attention they provided to David, and to the staff at the Irish Australian Welfare Bureau in Melbourne for all their support.
"The family have asked that their privacy now be respected as they grieve for the tragic loss of their precious and much-loved son.
"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."
Mr Greene and his friend David Byas, also 30, were assaulted in an alleged hammer attack at a boarding house in Lynedoch Avenue, St Kilda East.
Mr Byas was treated at hospital for his injuries but has since been released.
Victoria Police have charged Luke James Wentholt, from St Kilda East, with the assault on August 27.
He was remanded in custody to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on October 8.
