Irish and UK MEPs seek EU ban on Brazilian beef

A group of MEPs from Ireland and the UK are tabling a declaration in the European Parliament today seeking an EU-wide ban on Brazilian beef imports.

The MEPs claim the European Commission is allowing cheap imports despite lax quality controls in the South American country.

They want the European Parliament to write to the commission insisting on higher production standards or a blanket ban.

Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness says the EU should insist that Brazilian farmers be subject to the same standards as those in place in Europe.
