Ireland to take part in EU battlegroup

TD's have signed off on plans for Ireland to take part in an EU battlegroup.

Several hundred personnel from the Defence Forces could take part in the group which will be under German command.

The battlegroup will have a six-month mission to respond to any situation which threatens the security or defence of the EU.

However none of the 40 previous battlegroups have ever been called into any military action.
