The opposition party are calling for Ireland to become involved in the commonwealth games.

Fine Gael’s foreign affairs spokesman Gay Mitchell insists that this does not mean that we have to join the commonwealth itself.

Mr Mitchell says that one of the advantages of joining might be a decrease in sectarian violence.

He suggests that adapting different sporting attitudes could help improve peace prospects on both sides of the border.

He pointed out that the idea would be a two way process in that people in the North might be more inclined to play Gaelic games as well.

Northern Ireland and the Republic already compete as a team in rugby, boxing and showjumping.
