Ireland set to introduce minimum price for alcohol

Ireland will introduce a minimum price for alcohol - as long as it's cleared by authorities in Europe.

Junior finance minister Brian Hayes said in a Twitter Q&A session that the measure would be implemented if it was given legal clearance.

Scotland is proposing a similar measure, but a number of other European countries are mounting a legal challenge.

The Department of Health has supported the plans for a minimum price on alcohol as a public health measure.
