Ireland reacts to US terrorist attack

11/09/2001 - 18:41:35
The cabinet sub-committee on security has met at Government buildings in Dublin to discuss the implications of the terrorist attacks on the US for Irish people.

The Department of Foreign Affairs phone lines will remain open all night to deal with queries from worried families and friends of New York residents and workers.

Meanwhile, various world leaders and politicians have condemned the attacks, saying today is a dark day for democracy.

President Mary McAleese has spoken by telephone to the American Ambassador to Ireland and expressed her disbelief at today’s events.

Fine Gael leader Michael Noonan says Ireland should use our seat on the UN Security Council to express solidarity with the US throughout this crisis.

Today’s attack on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon may signal the biggest violent loss of life in the US since Pearl Harbour.

Commentators say this is possibly the worst terrorist attack in world history.

Fatalities are expected to be in the thousands, possibly tens of thousands.
