Iona director would accept gay adoptions over putting child in an orphanage
If there was a choice between putting a child in a 'Romanian-style' orphanage, or placing them for adoption with a gay couple, in that case it would be preferable to allow the child to be adopted.
That is according to the Director of the Iona Institute, an organisation that promotes marriage and religion in society.
The comments come after a High Court judge in Northern Ireland yesterday ruled that a ban on gay and unmarried couples adopting children is discriminatory.
The North's Health Minister plans to appeal the ruling.
In the Republic, gay couples do not currently have the same rights to adopt as heterosexual couples do.
David Quinn is the director of the Iona Institute says he would accept gay adoptions only in limited circumstances.
"If the choice is between being left in an orphanage and being raised by a loving single parent, a loving same sex couple, or a loving unmarried couple, then absolutely the child has to be adopted.
"Institutions, even when they are well run, are awful places for a child to grow up in. I've seen this and there's no question about it."
