IOG move to assure public about abortion methods

The Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has moved to assure the public that certain abortion methods described in the Seanad this week will not be used here.

Earlier this week Fianna Fáil Senator Jim Walsh was criticised by his colleagues for giving graphic accounts of termination practices.

But doctors have said that the destructive methods described for second trimester termination of pregnancy are currently not carried out in Ireland, nor will they be in the future.

The IOG said that the method used will not change under the new Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill - and it is reiterated that where a viable foetus is delivered, all efforts are made to preserve its life where possible.
