It may be the weekend before workers at Intel know the extent of job cuts at the company.
Internationally Intel is laying off 12,000 workers as it changes its business plan.
There is a nervous wait ahead for workers at Intel as they wait to discover the full extent of job losses.
5,500 people work for the company in Ireland with the majority of the job losses expected at their European headquarters in Leixlip, Co Kildare.
Intel is expected to brief some staff this evening, however Independent Councillor for Leixlip Bernard Caldwell has said we will not know the full extent of the losses for a few more days.
“We would be concerned about any job losses and particular here at Intel, but I don’t think it is going to be as bad as people are making it out to be,” said Caldwell.
“Now, we won’t know until later in the week the official figure, there’s all kinds of speculation at the moment.”
The company is restructuring to move away from selling computer chips for PCs.
Instead it will focus on more profitable industries.
However, they have said that the plants in Leixlip, Cork and Shannon remain essential to the future of the company.
