The Immigrant Council of Ireland is calling on any new Government to introduce a modern and fair immigration system as a priority.
It said that changes we need a new system, which is fit for purpose and similar to ones in operation in other countries.
The Council is also calling for the right of families to be together to be recognised in law.
Catherine Cosgrave, Legal Services Manager of the Immigrant Council, has said applicants find it difficult to navigate the system and face unnecessary and damaging delays: “During the year we would have assisted a number of people to be reunified with their minor children for example.
“Those visa applications were left pending for 12-18 months while decisions were taken and you can imagine that at that particularly tender stage of development, every week or month that parents are separated from children is crucial to family bonding and development.”
