Immigrant Council wants tougher trafficking laws
There is a warning that Ireland could become a safe haven for human trafficking gangs, unless our laws keep pace with the North and Britain.
The Immigrant Council of Ireland wants an all-island approach to put trafficking gangs out of business.
The call comes ahead of a cross border conference on the issue in Newry today.
Chief Executive of the Immigrant Council of Ireland, Denise Charlton, said Ireland's laws must not be soft on the criminal gangs who are exploiting women and girls.
She said: "We have always argued that traffickers and pimps will exploit any differences in law between the two jurisdictions on the island.
"That's why we are so anxious to see the law that is being considered, progressed."
