Five cases of the illness have been confirmed in England.

The disease is transmitted by biting insects like midges, which are believed to have been blown into England from northern Europe.

The IFA says strict biosecurity measures should be in place at all entry points into Ireland, while a risk analysis should also be carried out on imports from restricted areas.
