Ibrahim Halawa is in Egyptian jail three years today, without trial

Ibrahim Halawa is today marking three years behind bars without trial in Egypt.

The Dubliner's passed a letter to his family in which he says he is willing to die for freedom.

Ibrahim Halawa was 17-years-old when he was detained following a protest in Cairo, in support of deposed Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi.

Since that time, the now 20-year-old has had his trial adjourned 13 times.

Amnesty International say he has no prospect of a fair hearing, as he's being tried along with almost 500 others.

The Egyptian authorities have accused the Irish government of "unacceptable interference" for calling for his release.

In a letter, passed to his family, Ibrahim expresses his sorrow at his three years in jail and says he misses his family, Ireland and the warmth of Irish laughter.

He says he is fighting for others to gain democracy.

And he says he is willing to die for freedom.
