The trial of Dublin teenager Ibrahim Halawa is getting underway in Egypt this morning.
The 19-year-old from Firhouse was arrested in August 2013 while taking shelter in a mosque from protests in Cairo. He has been detained in prison there ever since.
His family said they are worried he will be sentenced to death.
Ibriham is due to go on trial along with 450 others today. His mass trial has been postponed several times already.
His sister, Nosayba, said his solicitor is planning to make an application to the court for his release.
"If the judge gives him an opportunity to speak, Ibrahim will speak. They will apply … asking for his release again today," she said.
However, she said the family are losing hope with news of recent death sentences being handed down.
"After we have been hearing that people, the last few weeks, have been getting the death penalty … I don't think that will give you a lot of hope."
