Irish Rail has says it is regrettable that it has been forced to close the Rosslare to Waterford rail line.
The company said that passenger numbers on the line in recent years had plummetted to just 25 a day and, as a result, it was no longer sustainable.
But locals in the south east have reacted with anger at the move, saying that a lack of appropriate timetabling was to blame.
Spokesperson for Iarnród Éireann, Barry Kenny, has said that for years the line was underwritten by the sugar beet industry.
