I was abused, says Barnardos chief Finlay

The CEO of the children's charity Barnardos has revealed today that he was abused as a child by "a member of the religious community".

Fergus Finlay insisted that it did not ruin his life as he was able to tell his father what had happened.

Mr Finlay says he is speaking out now to dispel the myth that in the past people did not understand what sexual abuse was.

"I was sexually abused in 1961 and I was physically abused in 1963," he said.

"I was 11 and 13 respectively at the time.

"I knew what it was, I knew that it was abuse, I told my father about it, he knew that it was abuse, he knew exactly what it was and he knew exactly what action needed to be taken, and it was taken.

"And as far as I know, the kind of action that was taken ensured that no other child was abused by the same person."
