Hundreds gather for Binchy funeral

Hundreds of people have attended the funeral of Maeve Binchy in Dublin today.

The requiem mass for the popular author and journalist took place in the Church of the Assumption in Dalkey, which was full to capacity.

The remains of the 72-year-old, who died on Monday evening after a short illness, have been taken to Mount Jerome Crematorium for a private service.

Meave Binchy's husband Gordon Snell and her sister Joan and brother William were joined by amongst others the President and Taoiseach's aides-de-camp at the Mass.

The familiar faces in attendance included actors Brenda Fricker, Frank Kelly, Eamon Morrissey and Claudia Carroll, broadcasters Vincent Browne, Pat Kenny, Marian Finucane and Nell McCafferty.

Local priest Fr William Stuart was the chief celebrant at the simple service.

"Yes, the crowd is very big," he said.

"And no, she wasn't the first citizen of Dalkey, but she was the most famous.

"She was a wonderful citizen. She was a wonderful person. She was a great interacter on all levels."
