Humanist Association calls for Constitution to remove references to God and blasphemy

We need to amend the Constitution to remove references to blasphemy and God, according to the Humanist Association of Ireland.

It's calling on the government to commit to a referendum on International Blasphemy Rights Day.

The Constitutional Convention - who suggest changes to the document - recommended in 2013 that the prohibition on blasphemy be removed.

The government agreed in principle but there's yet to be a referendum on the issue.

Terry Flynn from the HAI says it's important that references to God are removed as well: "Ireland has no extablished church and the state should reflect that by having a secular constitution and not refering to one religious grouping,

"That everybody sould have an opportunity to express themselves in the country and also other issues within the constitution like oaths and the presidency and judges should also be removed so all the children can aspire to the high offices of the land without any prejudice."
