HSE's apology 'incomplete', says mother of boy injured during birth

The mother of an eight-year-old boy who suffered injuries during his birth says the apology from the HSE is "incomplete".

Tadhg Costello, of Gurrane East, Sunhill, Killorglin, Co Kerry has brain damage and requires 24-hour care.

Today in the High Court, Tadhg received a €2.8m settlement from the Health Service Executive as well as an apology.

However, his mother Mary Costello said that the HSE's apology is incomplete given they denied liability for almost nine years following his birth at Kerry General Hospital.

She has told Radio Kerry that Tadhg has met adversity with courage, patience and a sense of fun.

"He's an amazing, intriguing boy and he enriches everybody that he meets," she said.

"His mile would light you and his laugh would lift you, he just melts everybody, he's a very special boy.

"It's reassuring for us as parents to know that his financial future will be taken care of, and that, as of from now, we'll be able to input a lot more physiotherapy, occupation therapy, etc."
