HSE investigate suspected leak of confidential patient information

The HSE is working with both Tallaght Hospital and the Data Protection Commissioner after it emerged there could be a breach of confidential patient information at the facility.

The hospital had hired a company to process patient files, however that firm sent the data to the Philippines to be transcribed.

The company says such data is always encrypted so there is no risk of a leak.

The HSE is investigating, but has not yet decided if action is required.

"The information was all encrypted and therefore not identifiable to any patient," said Minister for Health Dr James Reilly.

"I know that Tallaght have said that they're quite happy about that, however I believe the issue lies with the Data Protection Commissioner, and I think that he's the appropriate authority to rule on this."
