The Health Service Executive has said it has been in contact with legal representatives for Savita Halappanavar's husband Praveen about the inquiry into her death.

Savita died on Sunday, October 28 at University Hospital Galway after she suffered a miscarriage 17 weeks into her pregnancy.

A spokesperson for the HSE said a letter of condolence was sent to Mr Halappanavar in the days after his wife's death, and they had communicated with his lawyers in Ireland in recent days.

The HSE said it expected details of its inquiry into Savita's death to be announced in a matter of days, and that an international expert in obstetrics and gynaecology had been identified to join the inquiry team.

Meanwhile, the Garda Press Office has issued a statement to say gardaí are assisting the Coroner in relation to the death of Savita, as is standard procedure in such cases.
