The Health Service Executive (HSE) has come under fire for failing to confirm the extent of the cancer test review at Cork University Hospital.
The HSE is refusing to confirm how many cancer tests carried out by a Finnish pathologist are being reviewed by experts in London, what type of cancer is involved, or whether any cases have been misdiagnosed.
Reports have indicated the pathologist — who worked at the hospital for seven weeks from July 2 — misdiagnosed 15 patients and 166 tests have been sent for review.
Chairman of the South Regional Health Forum Councillor Liam O’Doherty has called on the HSE to clarify the situation.
He said: “It is a very worrying time for women who have been tested. People need to know the extent of the problem. It is imperative any patients involved are fully informed by the HSE.”
The HSE has confirmed a UK laboratory was reviewing the tests carried out by the pathologist. Any patients who required follow-up consultations have met specialist clinicians, according to the HSE.
The hospital has informed the Irish Medical Council about its concerns over the pathologist.
