Howth RNLI rescues four after boat begins to sink
Four people were rescued from a sinking boat off Ireland’s Eye yesterday afternoon.
The rescue took place as people enjoyed the midday sunshine.
The Howth RNLI crew launched their inshore lifeboat at around 12.20 following a call from a member of the public who saw the 18ft vessel taking on water on the north side of Ireland's Eye.
The four passengers onboard managed to leave the boat by climbing onto nearby rocks and waiting for the volunteer boat.
The crew then transferred the people safely to shore and the submerged vessel was towed back to land.
Nobody was injured in the rescue.
Howth RNLI lifeboat crewmember Ian Sheridan said: "The good weather has brought an increase in the amount of people taking to the water.
"Thankfully conditions were calm and the four people involved in today’s callout were all wearing personal floatation devices."
The RNLI is urging all water users to exercise safety and carry a lifejacket.
The message comes as a post mortem will be carried out today on the body of a boy who drowned in Drogheda yesterday.
