Howlin: Wind-down of State agencies 'at various stages of preparation'

Minister for Public Expenditure Brendan Howlin has played down concerns about slow progress in the Government's plans to reduce the number of State agencies.

A total of 48 State agencies were earmarked for closure or merger last year, but newspaper reports claimed just 17 of those would complete the process by the end of 2012.

Minister Brendan Howlin has today revealed that one of those bodies has been given a reprieve.

He said however that progress is being made on the rest of the list.

"The one exception is the National Cancer Registry," he said.

"I have accepted the view that it should be a standalone entity, I think that that should not be subsumed back into the Department of Health.

"But the other 47, and they're at various stages of preparation, but I expect all ministers who are responsible to fully accept the Government decision and to have the work done, at least administratively, by the end of this year."
