Housing charity says rent supplement 'obviously needs to be increased'

The national housing charity, Threshold, is calling for reform of rent supplement, as well as "rent certainty".

Threshold says current legislation contains loopholes, which means families living in rental properties could lose the roof over their head.

The organisation wants a strategy which covers rent supplement, deposit protection and minimum standards in rented accommodation.

Threshold CEO Bob Jordan says the rent supplement does not go near to meeting market rates.

"There are over 180 families in Dublin living in hotels as a direct result of losing their rent supplement accommodations," he said.

"So what we're saying is rent supplement limits obviously need to be increased to reflect real market rents".

"And we would say that if rent regulation was introduced at the same time, then the Government wouldn't have the problem of chasing exorbitant rent increases - which is obviously something they want to avoid".

"So we want to see rent regulations increased, but we also want to see rent regulation introduced."
