Household charge now payable online

Almost 2,400 people have now registered to pay the new €100 household charge.

The levy - which has come in for much criticism - is an annual charge that requires homeowners to opt in and pay by the end of March on www.householdcharge.ie.

Failure to pay could result in a court appearance and a fine.

"The household charge is now law," said Jackie Maguire, chair of the Household Charge Project Board - the group tasked with overseeing the payment process.

"I would urge people to go online and pay."

Meanwhile opponents of the charge have announced a meeting to discuss their campaign.

The Campaign Against Household & Water Taxes is holding the meeting in the Teacher's Club, Dublin, at 1pm on January 14 and it is open to all.

"Further details regarding the agenda and speakers for the meeting will be publicised before the event, but the purpose of the meeting is to bring together activists to discuss how best to step up the national non-payment campaign," a spokesperson said.
