Hospital consultants want to see full detail of A&E review

16/12/2008 - 16:08:38
Hospital consultants say they want to see the exact details of the HSE's A&E review before the changes come into effect.

The Health Service Executive is to review the full time status of 11 A&E units in Dublin and Cork.

Cuts to in-patient admissions, hospital stays and out-patient numbers are also on the cards.

The move is designed to cut around €530m in spending next year.

Donal Duffy from the Irish Hospital Consultants Association said the plan wasn't beyond implementation.

“It is medically feasible alright provided all the infrastructures are in place, that there are sufficient hospital beds in which to admit the patients and if the ambulance service is sufficiently resourced to do it.”

“Bear in mind that some of the hospitals in Dublin are providing service to people down in south Wicklow and indeed north Wexford, so extra distances that might arise might not necessarily be that significant.”
