Hogan pledges to keep public informed about water tax details

Environment Minister Phil Hogan is pledging to give the public as much clarity as possible throughout the introduction of the water tax.

Environment Minister Phil Hogan has said that the Government will give the public "as much clarity as we can" throughout the introduction of the water tax.

The Government announced the establishment of Irish Water yesterday, as an independent subsidiary of Bord Gais.

People can expect to receive their first water bills from the end of 2014.

Minister Hogan said that in the meantime, the Government will be as clear as possible on what is being decided.

"I understand that people are going through a very difficult time so therefore it is important to give clarity as to who is going to be in charge, what are the systems that are going to be put in place, and the time involved in rolling out this particular project," he said.

"So in 2014, there will be the first bills, as I say, going in the door at the end of that year and in the meantime we will give people as much clarity as we can once decisions are made by Government, the regulator and Bord Gais."
