Hobbs: Support for new party is in the thousands

Eddie Hobbs claims support for his new party is already in the thousands.

He and former junior Fine Gael minister Lucinda Creighton are preparing to launch the so far nameless political party in the coming weeks.

Last week they promised that everyone in Ireland will be able to vote for a candidate from the new party at the next election.

Hobbs has yet to rule himself in or out of running for election, but claims the party is gathering many followers.

"We have support now running in the thousands," he said. "We have way above - multiples - the amount of people prepared to stand as candidates than we expected.

"This is new blood with new thinking - not just going around trying to pick up here and there from the existing political stock."

"That, to me, is the first target achieved, as far as I'm concerned."

Separately, in a video interview with TheJournal.ie published today, Hobbs also rubbished any suggestion of an ideological divide between himself and Creighton over abortion or other issues.

"She could believe in alien abduction and it wouldn't matter, provided it didn't interfere with what we're trying to do. And a lot of people do - scientologists, for example."
