Historical arms dump found in Dublin house
Residents around Dublin's North Strand are returning to their homes after an historic arms dump was found in a house earlier today.
A cache of grenades, rifle rounds and artillery shells were discovered under the kitchen floor of a house being renovated on Strandville Avenue, shortly before 11am this morning.
Gardaí and the Army Bomb Disposal United evacuated the street for over four hours.
Train and DART services at nearby Connolly Station were also disrupted for a time but are now running normally.
The owner of the house where the explosives were discovered says he was shocked by the find.
"As we were digging up the floor we found this metal lid, and underneath the lid we found (something which) looked like an old grenade," the man said.
"We brought it outside and then called the guards."
An army spokesperson said the munitions, which were badly corroded, date back many years, possibly as far back as the War of Independence.
A bomb disposal team made the munitions safe and removed them to a secure location for destruction.
The scene was declared safe at 3.15pm.
