Seven historic cottages used by coastguards on Antrim’s north coast almost 150 years ago were today saved from the wrecking ball.

Plans to knock down part of the Portrush site where the homes have stood since 1870 have been thwarted by a government preservation order.

The North's Environment Agency’s Building Preservation Notice (BPN) will initially protect the structures for up to six months.

Officials will now carry out further research on the cottages’ significance with a view to obtaining permanent protection.

North Environment Minister Sammy Wilson said the move would ensure an important part of the area’s maritime history was preserved.

“I am pleased to see this decisive action by my department in response to a threat to this largely untouched historic coastguard complex,” he said.

“I commend the local residents and their elected representatives who brought these buildings to our attention.

“It is important the best parts of our collective heritage are protected for the appreciation of present and future generations.

“These buildings, tucked away on a side street in one of our premier holiday resorts, were not previously recorded and appear to be a strong and well preserved reminder of our maritime history and the resources which were deployed to protect our seas in past times.”

The redevelopment work, which was due to start last week, would have destroyed part of the original boundary wall and, according to the NIEA, significantly altered the enclosed nature of the site.
