High Court to hear State's response to Moore Street ruling

The High Court is due to hear the State’s response to its ruling that a wider section of Moore Street in Dublin should be declared a national monument.

Minister for Arts and Heritage Heather Humphreys wanted to build a commemorative centre at the site to mark the centenary of the 1916 Rising.

Number 16 Moore Street is considered to be the final headquarters of the leaders of the 1916 Rising and was designated a national monument in 2010 along with numbers 14, 15 and 17.

Last month, the High Court put a stop to plans to build a commemorative centre at the site by deciding the wider area should be protected.

The Minister for Arts & Heritage claimed the buildings in question held no historical significance and ought to be knocked to make way for the centre, but Mr Justice Max Barrett disagreed.

The matter was adjourned until today to allow the Minister consider the judgement.

The court may also hear whether she intends to appeal the decision when it reconvenes this morning.
