Michael D Higgins has said the Labour Party won't have a problem finding a replacement for him.

The Galway West TD has confirmed that he will not be standing for re-election in the next General Election.

Earlier this week Mr Higgins, who is seeking the Labour Party nomination for the Presidency, told the party executive in his constituency to begin reviewing its candidate line-up.

Speaking to Galway Bay fm he said there are a number of people who would do a great job.

Mr Higgins said: "I think the Labour Party is in very good shape in the city. We have a number of very good councillors in local politics.

"We have lots of people who have been active with us who would be a fine replacement."
