Health system deteriorating under Harney, says Labour

25/03/2005 - 19:02:24
The Labour party said today that Tánaiste and Minister for Health, Mary Harney, has had more than enough time to solve the A&E crisis, but the situation is deteriorating rather than improving.

Labour Health Spokeswoman Liz McManus said the average number of patients waiting on trolleys has grown by 12% since February.

She has called on the public to turn out and support the Irish Nurses Organisation in their upcoming protests on the crisis.

Deputy McManus says Mary Harney has simply failed to deliver on her promised: “She is now in the job for approximately six months and she set the target herself of dealing with the A&E crisis as being her priority.

“All the signals were that we would be getting real improvements by early April, late March – well, we’re in late March now and we have ferocious problems,” she said.
