Head of health service outlines plans for next five years

Professor Brendan Drumm, the new head of the Health Service Executive, said today he wanted to simplify access, improve teamwork among health professionals and reward high performance.

He said problems with accident and emergency services could not be resolved unless there was a political decision on how to provide and fund nursing home beds for elderly patients.

He said over 30% of those attending A&E were suffered stress-related illnesses, which a local GP could more easily deal with.
