Hayes: Varadkar wrong in 'stroke politics' comment

A Fine Gael minister has said party colleague Leo Varadkar was wrong when he agreed that a decision to add two locations in James Reilly's constituency to a list of primary care centres looked like "stroke politics".

When asked whether Minister Varadkar was wrong to say he could see how the situation could look like "stroke politics", Deputy Hayes said: "Yes. He was wrong."

Mr Varadkar made the comment at the weekend, but said he trusted Minister Reilly to make the right decision.

This morning, Junior Finance Minister Brian Hayes insisted the decision was James Reilly's to make.

"The Minister for Health is the person who makes the decision on that," he said. "Of course a number of factors would feed into that decision…That decision was endorsed by the Cabinet."
