Hanafin rules herself out of local and European elections

Former Fianna Fail Minister Mary Hanafin has ruled out standing in this year's local or European elections.

It follows speculation that the ex-Dun Laoghaire TD might run in the Dublin euro constituency

However, Ms Hanafin says she is interested in standing again for the party at the next general election - but acknowledges it will be a difficult task.

"I believe that in the next election in Dun Laoghaire, because it is always a barometer for the rest of country, you're not going to see the same strength attached to some candidates as you had, for example the last time.

"We'll do some polls to see what people are actually thinking and what people want."
