GSOC investigate death of man who was in garda custody
The Garda Ombudsman is today investigating the death of a man who had been in Garda custody.
The 23-year-old man was arrested yesterday in Maynooth and taken to Leixlip Garda station.
However, an ambulance was called on his arrival to the station.
He was taken to James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown, where he later died.
The investigation, which was referred to the Garda Ombudsman in accordance with Section 102 of the Act, is at an early stage.
The law compels the Garda Commissioner to refer any case to the Garda Ombudsman where it appears that the conduct of an officer may have resulted in the death of a person or serious harm.
“Gardaí have informed us that the4 man was intoxicated when he was arrested,” said GSOC spokesperson Lorna Lee.
The identity of the deceased cannot be released until all family members have been informed.
