Group calls on minister to fulfil promise to victims of Dr Neary

Patient Focus will today call on Health minister James Reilly to fulfil a promise made to 35 women who were left out of a redress scheme for former patients of doctor Michael Neary at the Lourdes Hospital.

The women had hysterectomies or had their ovaries removed by Dr Neary, but they were subsequently excluded on age grounds from a compensation scheme.

The Minister had said he was committed to finding a mechanism as soon as possible to sort out the problem.

But Cathriona Molloy, of Patient Focus, said that was two years ago and they are still waiting.

Ms Molloy said: "These were women who had gynaecological procedures and who had ovaries removed, but they were over the age of 40, so they didn't qualify for the original scheme.

"These women have been dealing with us for a number of years with a commitment given two years ago by the minister that these women would be looked after and a scheme would be put in place for them, but to date, the scheme hasn't been put in place for these women."
