Calls are being made for one hot meal a day to be offered to the almost 900,000 primary and secondary school students in Ireland.
It is estimated the school dinner programme would cost €350m a year to run.
The proposal is being launched today by the Green Party who say the issue will be one of their policies if they win seats in the next General Election.
Green Party spokesperson on food and Galway West candidate Seamus Sheridan said it would make economic sense to offer the meals.
"It could be a massive benefit to the Irish agricultural system and create massive employment...Can you imagine the benefit to the Irish farming sector? I think it would be very exciting," he said.
