Green party aims for European seats at election campaign launch

The Green Party has launched its European election campaign, insisting it can win seats.

The party is running candidates in all three constituencies in the State, as well as one in the North.

The party's leader, Eamon Ryan, said the Green movement across the EU is better integrated than any other political movement, and electing Green MEPs is even more relevant in light of recent extreme weather:

"We have seen tense storms arrive at our shores in the last two months that makes people know that climate change is real," he said.

"So investing to protect our people against that and investing to prevent it becoming a worse weather future is where we think there's an opportunity to turn our union around."

All six Green TDs lost their seats in the 2011 general election, and both Seanad candidates also failed to win election.
