GRA: 'Angry and frustrated' Gardaí are 'not interested' in Govt pay proposal

Update 9.15am: Rank-and-file Gardaí say no deal has been done on their pay, yet.

Brendan O'Connor the GRA's Donegal representative is not optimistic.

Mr O'Connor said: "There is no deal hammered out, there is no agreement.

"The fundamental issue for our members is pay restoration and there has been no pay restoration on offer in that deal.

"The feedback that we are getting on the ground from many of our members is that they are not interested.

"What's on offer really is an extension of the Lansdowne Road Agreement which our members overwhelmingly rejected."

Earlier: Gardaí could reach a decision today on whether to engage in industrial action.

The Garda Representative Association's Central Executive Committee will meet in Tullamore to discuss a pay proposal from the Department of Justice.

It comes after they said they needed more time to consider the offer following a meeting on Monday.

It was revealed yesterday that members had voted in favour of industrial action but the ballot was conducted before the draft pay agreement was reached.

GRA President Ciaran O'Neill says he cannot predict what the outcome of today's meeting will be.

He said: "The ballot is showing that our members are angry, our members are frustrated and what has happened is that they are willing to take industrial action.

"The proposal from the department is going to be discussed by the delegates at the conference down here in Tullamore and later in the day we will be making a decision in respect of that."
