Govt to vote down public inquiry into banking crisis

Deputy George Lee
The Government will tonight vote down the Labour party proposal for a public inquiry into the banking crisis.
Instead a Commission of Investigation will conduct a probe behind closed doors.
In advance an independent review of the crisis will take place, while the new Governor of the Central Bank will assess its role as a watchdog.
Fine Gael's George Lee said that proposal shows just how wrong the Government's approach is.
"We are being asked to accept that the Central Bank will report on itself, and expect that this will restore confidence," Deputy Lee said. "I think that simply cannot be true."
"The Central Bank itself has failed… and now they are going to write a report on their own failure.
"That, from a public perspective, is obscene."
