Govt sacked Callinan on political whim: Stone
The general secretary of the Garda Representative Association has said former commissioner Martin Callinan was given "no option or choice but to resign".
PJ Stone made the comments on the final day of the GRA annual conference in Killarney in Co Kerry.
He accused the Government of sacking the former Garda Commissioner on a political whim. Mr Callinan left the post in March.
PJ Stone said Martin Callinan was removed from office in what was "a disgraceful way to treat the head of a police force".
"The removal of Mr Callinan illustrates to me at least that the Garda Síochána is subject to political whim," he said.
He called for an independent oversight body to take control of the force, including its budgets, its resources, its capital expenditure and its promotion system.
