Govt planning commissioner to oversee bus and rail sector

Transport Minister Martin Cullen is reportedly planning to appoint a special commissioner to oversee and regulate the bus and rail sectors.

Reports this morning said the move was part of a package of reforms being negotiated between the Government, trade unions and transport companies.

The reports said the new commissioner would oversee fares, routes and timetables for both private and public operators.

He would also reportedly have the power to fine companies for failing to adhere to timetables.

This morning's reports said the package of reforms also included provisions for the privatisation of 15% of all new bus routes in Dublin.
