Govt 'has to examine removal of pensions from corrupt politicians'

Another government minister has called for the pensions of politicians who are found guilty of corruption or misconduct to be withdrawn.

Another government minister has called for the pensions of politicians who are found guilty of corruption or misconduct to be withdrawn.

Last night the Junior Minister Joe Costello said he would be pressing for a referendum on the matter to allow the pensions of such people to be withdrawn.

His comments come following the publication last week of the Mahon Report.

A three-day Dáil debate on its findings will take place later this week.

The Children's Minister Frances Fitzgerald has said taking away pensions from civil servants who are found guilty of such serious offences should be considered.

She said: "The public want to see action, the scale of the corruption is sickening, and the Government will act on the recommendations of the Tribunal.

When asked if she believed pensions should be taken, the Minister replied: "Certainly that has to be examined."
