The Government has given the HSE approval to hire one thousand new nurses and midwives.

The graduates will be taken on early next year.

The Executive says the initiative will see graduate nurses deployed across its services, which currently rely on agency staff and overtime.

Staff will be paid 80% of the going salary, and it is hoped the initiative will save the HSE about €10m in wage costs during 2013.
