Government urged to allow under 18s to change legal gender
The Government has been urged to allow under-18s to officially change their legal gender.
LGBT groups are in the Oireachtas today to give their feedback on the Government's plans to reform the laws on gender recognition.
The draft laws only allow someone to legally change their gender if they are over the age of 18.
Andy Mannion from the gay rights group BelongTo says transgendered younger people face specific challenges.
"Transgendered young people have told BelongTo that it would be too painful to wait until they are 18 to apply for gender recognition," she said.
"Significantly, they fear that it would set in stone the very unwelcome climate they face in schools."
