Government to veto tax on off-licence sales

The Government is to veto plans to put a new tax on sales in off-licences.

The coalition will vote down a bill from Fianna Fáil in the Seanad tomorrow.

The bill would have added 90c to a bottle of wine, or 25c to a can of beer, to fund suicide prevention.

A government spokesman said Fine Gael and Labour had a more "holistic" approach to mental health and would not be approving the bill.
